This is the reason why you’re here. To learn and to absorb valuable intel like an all natural sea sponge. This is not your run of the mill Substack where your favorite copy/paste men’s fashion content creator talks about his top 10 best bang for your buck sweaters on SSENSE to buy RIGHT NOW. This is high-level classified information that might not hit the screens of regular fashion enthusiasts until 2 years later… You heard it here first.
The existence of Max Thomas Sanderson is just that - high level classified intel, known by few and far between. What I believe sets this brand apart from everything else out there is its focus on tailoring and craft. Everything is made to order which creates a special relationship between you (the wearer) and the garment. It also minimizes waste which god knows is an initiative we need more of.
When I first came across Max’s clothes, I was immediately struck by the level of detail. The signature “Slow Stitch” is visibly present throughout all the pieces - a literal thread that brings the whole season-less (for now) collection together. I would describe “Slow Stitch” as an intricate contrast topstitching that binds the cuts of fabric together. It possesses both function and an incredibly interesting visual appeal. Threads travel vertically and diagonally to create a beautiful pattern that is best appreciated in a visual manner (image attached).
As you may have read in my previous piece on tailoring - I have a growing interest in clothing that is made to order. It just feels more personal and there’s a special and particular process. Yes, purchasing something on sale and getting a sweet deal is an incredible feeling as well - but having something made specifically for you and cut to your proportions is something else entirely.
I now see a growing interest from brands coming up with a made to order program and it makes sense. From a business standpoint, you’re not falling victim to excess supply and overspending on production. From a consumer standpoint, the products being made feel more special - and I know we all want to feel special.
A bit about Max - he’s an Australian bloke with first class Honors from RMIT and l’Institut Français de la Mode. What sets him apart from most is his technical know-how. He has a background in tailoring (working in a bespoke tailoring atelier) before cutting his teeth at Hermès for their menswear. Hermès menswear is massively underrated but that’s a conversation for another time. For the time being - feast your eyes upon the expertly cut and crafted collection of clothes from Max Thomas Sanderson. As of now, the clothes are available directly from the source.
